Seattle – Blurred Edges

I spent the weekend in Seattle visiting family and taking in the City. It was a blustery and cold weekend, but it was refreshing in a sense-And I had the chance to check out Chihuly’s Glass and Garden Instillation. While wondering about I took a few photographs. I have to admit that it was just one of those days-All of my shots were completely out of focus. But I played with them, attempting the “when life gives you lemons” story. It can be surprising what is possible when the edges of life and imagery blur. Accepting that every shot I take will not be perfect-That I will have to work with unexpected flaws, fills me with terror and delight.

In essence-This blog is dedicated to the joys of failing, and finding something else hidden within the absence of perfection.

Emeryville – Afternoon Strolls

I took part of an afternoon to have a stroll through the Emeryville shopping district. I was captivated first in conversation, and then behind the lens by a young woman working in one of the shops. She had a really lovely sense of herself, and her weight in the world. A beautiful smile and inquisitive eyes. On my way out I spotted a young woman, looking absolutely stunning, a ray of sunlight against a chilly afternoon. At the moment I find myself writing less and seeing more-My images replace that of  voice, speaking of the travels and faces that most captivate and intrigue.

San Anselmo- Waiting for the Train at Midnight

How do you keep New Year’s Eve classy? One waits for the midnight train, dripping with jewels, tendrils of hair framing a striking face. Prepared with a jacket swung over a crisp shoulder, lingering, anticipating, waiting. Laughing and loving in the company of those closest to you. Embracing the moment, for all the beauty and heartbreak that it brings.

Oakland-Holiday Bustle

I recently was working in the East Bay, and realized that I had not had the opportunity of yet to do a bit of street photography there. I decided to go and do a bit of holiday shopping along Piedmont Ave and see who else was out and about a week before Christmas. I was taken back at how many lovely backdrops I was able to stumble over while photographing people as they made their way up and down the street. Many people where heading home from work, grabbing a coffee and window shopping a bit.

I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and has a safe and enjoyable New Years Eve. I just want to thank all of my readers for an amazing year, and I look forward to what 2013 will bring. At the moment my intention is to put together a post that will highlight my favorite images from 2012. So stay tuned for that!

Sonoma State University-Handy Headphones

Technology permeates the very fabric of our culture. One might even go so far as to say it defines our cultural and social lifestyle in the 21st century.

I spend a fair deal of time listening to music while I study, or move about my life. I have invested in several pairs of headphones, ranging in all shapes, colours, and sizes. So over time I have found it to be a fascinating study to see what kinds of headphones people like to wear, and how it gives me glimpse into their persona. Sometimes it’s not just about the headphones themselves, but in how they accessorize them, or dress them up.

Sacramento-Shades of the Season

The days race by, and I feel the season moving steadily towards wintery stillness. I listen to the rain pattering on windowpanes and embrace the changing light and colour.

I was out and about in Sacramento this past weekend. It was a pleasure to take a few days off from routine, and do something completely different. Taking my camera with  I felt that many of the photographs I took, simply landed on my metaphorical doorstep.

I’m always so amazed by how different, unique, and beautiful people are in the world. Strip away all the details and just see the form. The person looking back at me when I click a button. Transformed, transposed, captured through light, and colour. Fading out or fading into crispness. I play with the contrast, until I see a bit of the depths, emerging through the layer of flesh stretched tight across-blending the layers together-reveling in a moment of richness-consonance.

Marin-A Colour-Filled Life

Life-It seems to come and go in huge waves of intensity and then a bit of drifting. I had really fun time playing with my mothers knitting basket the other day….lots of warm and cozy-making spun sheep.

yep it definitely feels like fall is on her way.

I took an afternoon off from all the craziness and went to have nails done. There is a very sweet gentleman at my nail salon whose specialty, are intricate nail art designs. I always love to watch the attention and care that he pays to the delicate petals as they unfold on my waiting thumbs. I then enjoy spending a week with mini works of art on my fingertips, striving desperately to not chip them sooner than one can avoid.

What does beauty look like when you stumble upon it? Can an old beat up bit of scrap metal, be full of glowing jewel bright colours? I walked by a scrape yard of car parts…and paused…the brittle, forgotten beauty of the material had a quality that could be seen to stand alongside my flowering nails or wooly basket.

A perfectly lovely afternoon

Forgotten Beauty

Petaluma-Turning of the Season

I stopped into my favorite jam in Petaluma, Aquas Cafe. A warm almond chai and a Turkey Fig sandwich of fantastic-ness made my Wednesday survivable. Today I made the attempt to see the world in pictures. For the past few weeks, I have spent most of my time thinking in symbols and theorems…but what of colour, light, and darkness? The beauty and vividness of a gesture, the fantasy of a line drawn in space, the movement of a body through a room. I spent my day paying attention to these moving pictures, and remembering their quiet rhythm in the world.

The Last Hurrah to Summer

Such Beautiful Detail

The weather has been extremely unpredictable. The clouds have been epic, and created very beautiful sunset magic. I can feel the light beginning to change, taking on a softer quality. The leaves are beginning to turn and my landscape is transformed. I just feel a small prick of sadness to be leaving summer behind, to be transitioning into this quieter time of the year.

My Evening Drive Home

San Francisco-Academy of Sciences

My brother, friends, and I have had an amazing summer. We called it Summer Camp 2012. As our final hurrah to a summer well loved several of the peeps and I headed into the city for a day at the Academy of Sciences. It was an afternoon of wonder and excitement. We commented on the fact that because we did not have adult supervision….we might have misbehaved a bit more then the smaller people under feet.

Wonder

After a full day of walking, giggling and (gently) poking sea stars we headed to dinner. It was decided by consensus that after a day spent near our aquatic friends, sushi was a good idea. On our way to our old faithful Naked Fish, I spotted a pair of headphones that could not be ignored. This young woman was commuting in style, listening to beats that definitely matched her SF beat.

San Francisco-Smiles and Underground Transportation

I was working early in the city a few Saturdays past. The part of town I was heading towards did not have a great deal of parking. So I decided to try taking Bart (Our local underground “Tube”) from Berkeley into SF. To be honest, it was my first official time ever using Bart as a form of transportation. After living in the Bay Area almost four years…I decided it needed to be done

In many ways using public transportation frees one up to actually see. To observe and photograph at will, without the worries that go with maneuvering a car from point a to point b. One of the great joys I miss from my summer abroad was the freedom that came with constantly walking, and taking trains to my desired destinations.

One of the first people I saw after stepping off Bart was a very sweet man by the name of Salvatore. He was on his way to perform at a club, as he indicated, around the corner. We spoke for a few minutes, and upon hearing my name, he sang to me. It was a sweet ballad from Mexico about “Raquelita” or little Rachael. I was so tickled by his song, and left waving my goodbyes to him in souring spirits.

Saturday Morning

After a rather enjoyable morning working, it was time to head back to East Bay. I hopped on Bart and after almost taking the wrong route, I managed to find my way to the appropriate line.Part way into my trip I spent a few minutes watching a rather cool dude. I finally asked if I could photograph him. The headphones and the sunglasses were such an amazing blend of awesomeness.
